Designed by Gensler Architects from the United States, this colossal skyscraper spans 576,000 square meters and seamlessly integrates offices, hotels, convention spaces, exhibition halls, commercial areas, and sightseeing opportunities.
Reflecting a harmonious blend of modernity and tradition, Shanghai Center Tower’s unique “dragon-shaped” streamlined glass crystals pay homage to China’s rich cultural heritage. The design ingeniously draws inspiration from Shanghai’s urban fabric, with meandering lines inspired by the Huangpu River and the distinctive Shikumen architecture. The tower’s spiral form symbolizes the rotation of the universe and the transcendence of time and space—a motif deeply rooted in Chinese art and philosophy. It gracefully extends from the ground to the clouds, representing the yearning for a heavenly wonderland beyond earthly constraints.
Shanghai Center Tower is a vertical city featuring nine zones, each spanning 12 to 15 floors. This innovative design includes a Sky Garden, distinguishing it from other supertall buildings. By prioritizing public space and incorporating cultural, commercial, and dining facilities into the sky lobby, the tower redefines the experience of living and working in a supertall structure.
To withstand Shanghai’s frequent typhoons, Gensler employed three key design strategies— asymmetrical forms, tapered building profiles, and rounded corners. Collaborating with structural consultant Thornton Tomasetti, wind tunnel tests were conducted, reducing wind loads by 24%, resulting in a lighter structure and substantial material cost savings.
